Advanced and Functional Grammar
Structural and Systemic Functional Approaches to English Language Analysis
Grammar has long been regarded as one of the central foundations of language study. In many learning contexts, however, grammar is still commonly understood as a set of rules, patterns, and corrections that determine whether a sentence is acceptable or unacceptable. While this formal understanding is necessary, it is not sufficient for advanced language analysis. At higher levels of academic and professional communication, grammar needs to be understood not only as structure, but also as a system of meaning that operates within social, textual, and cultural contexts. This book, Advanced and Functional Grammar: Structural and Systemic Functional Approaches to English Language Analysis, was written to provide an integrated reference for readers who wish to understand English grammar beyond sentence-level accuracy. It brings together two complementary perspectives: Advanced Grammar and Systemic Functional Grammar. The structural perspective helps readers examine how English forms are organized through phrases, clauses, tense, aspect, voice, sentence complexity, and discourse markers. The functional perspective extends this understanding by showing how grammatical choices construe experience, negotiate interpersonal relations, and organize texts.
